Con Brio

San Francisco, CA
There’s a moment before each Con Brio show — before the backflips, the ...guitar solos, the buoyant horn lines over bass, drum and synth — when all seven band members come in for a huddle. It’s a way to say grace; an acknowledgment of live music as a team sport; a moment of stillness before they explode. “Let’s work,” they say, their heads bowed together. And then they do. Named for an Italian musical direction meaning ‘with spirit,’ Con Brio is a San Francisco Bay Area band that plays soul, psych-rock and R&B as fresh and freethinking as the place they call home. With charismatic singer Ziek McCarter bringing “the dance moves, splits and all, of James Brown” (KQED) and a band that “comes across like a party punk version of Sly and the Family Stone” (Consequence of Sound), Con Brio is known to convert anyone who sees their electric live show. Founded in 2013 by veteran players with vastly different musical backgrounds*, the band quickly became a favorite up and down the West Coast, then across the U.S., and then overseas in places like Japan and the Netherlands. In 2016, Con Brio’s debut LP Paradise paired uplifting dance party-starters (and some psychotropic electric guitar wo Read More

Deezie Brown

Bastrop, TX
Based out of Austin, Texas, Deezie Brown delivers a southern depiction of A...lternative Hip-Hop and Funk. Deezie Brown was exposed to hip-hop at an early age while he rode around with his dad listening to some of the great artists of the South such as OutKast and UGK. He started recording using old tape players in middle school. In February 2018, Judith, his debut album was release. The album, which is named after Judith from The Bible, was a woman who fought for her town as it was besieged by enemies and death imminent. The album is a reflection of this story. Deezie found his creative mind, heart and soul being challenged by various ‘enemies’. Whether it be personal hardships with ones close to him or difficulties he faced with pursuing a creative dream. His next album, tentatively titled 5th Wheel Fairytale, is not only a sonic shift in sound, but in outlook on life. Deezie has come to term with many enemies, allowing himself to be happier. His next album will be tailored for the blue collar worker. For those that do what is necessary to live their best life and positively affect everyone around. Read More

Grupo Fantasma

Austin, TX
The nine-piece collective formed in 2000 in Austin, Texas, and are now ente...ring their 19th year as a band. Grupo Fantasma has been praised as one of the most important independent acts in the Latin genre and has continually defied expectations to create one of the most unique musical voices to come out of the USA in the 21st century. In 2011, they garnered further acclaim by winning a Grammy (their 2nd such nomination) for their self–produced release El Existential, which the Wall Street Journal called “Latin music both new and traditional…vibrant fusions that transcend easy classification.” Their 7th full-length album American Music Vol. VII was released in 2019 on Blue Corn Music. The very title of the record takes on definitions of identity, borders and who is illegal or “other.” In presenting their unique multi-ethnic musical mix to audiences over the years, Grupo were constantly challenged by “the concept of identity, citizenship, and the nationality of music,” especially in the press and music industry. Yet, as they attest, in many ways “music is the ultimate assimilator, crossing borders and cultures and mutating to represent the the experiences of its performers.” Read More

Shopping

London, UK-ENGLAND
Shopping's sound – kinetic, minimalist dance-punk inspired by the likes o...f ESG, Gang of Four, Slits and Au Pairs – has won them glowing press from all quarters (NME, Pitchfork, NPR), impressive co-signs (Sleater-Kinney’s Corin Tucker is a fan) and a loyal, cross-continent following accrued over three, acclaimed albums: self-released debut Consumer Complaints [2013], a short-run, DIY-distributed release that sold out in a matter of months and was subsequently reissued by FatCat; Why Choose [2015, FatCat], which saw the band touring the States for the first time; and The Official Body [2018, FatCat] – produced by indie pop legend Edwyn Collins – which bagged the threesome a main stage slot at San Francisco Pride. The bands forthcoming album All Or Nothing was written across an intense 10-day period back in February 2019, with sessions spent in London and Glasgow. The songs that emerged are some of Shopping’s boldest yet: confident, elastic, streamlined grooves that crackle with energy and intention. Uniting these ten new songs is an expression of tenacity: commitment, leaps of faith and tests of courage. Read More
