Beat Root Revival

Stomping, singing and cheering. It's not your average night out at your fav...orite music venue, that is, unless Austin-based duo Beat Root Revival are performing. The tandem, which consists of Andrea Magee and Ben Jones, has made a big splash in a short period of time, justifiably earning the approval of audiences for their high-octane, lively performances. Leaving the UK behind, the duo settled in Austin, Texas, a town where they’ve comfortably nestled into the city’s vibrant music community. They were drawn to the spirit of the local music scene, in particular, Roky Erickson and the other cosmic cowboys of the ‘70s. Describing their sound as “organic, acoustic, rhythmic and rootsy,” having two singer-songwriters can often make for a very limited sound, but not Magee and Jones. First, the budding duo’s fan base grew, then the legends came calling. Intrigued by the groundswell of support that Beat Root Revival garnered, the duo was tapped to open for bands such as The Brian Setzer Orchestra, Jeff Bridges, and legendary Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson for a few years. Buffalo Nichols

Milwaukee, WI
For all the moonlighting he's done in other genres over the years, Carl Nic...hols always comes back to the blues. At various points in his career Nichols has played gospel (despite being an atheist), West African music (despite being born and raised in Milwaukee) and, as one half of the acclaimed folk duo Nickel & Rose, Americana (despite having some deep reservations about that genre's long history of appropriating black music without always welcoming black musicians). None of those gigs, however, extinguished his desire to play the kind of traditional, acoustic blues he grew up admiring. Maybe on some level he's pathologically drawn to spaces where he's an outsider. As a twentysomething black musician, Nichols is all too aware that the modern blues scene doesn't look much like him, but he never outgrew his childhood love of the music. "It seemed cool to me when I was young," he says. "You'd just hear people like Lightnin’ Hopkins or R.L. Burnside, and they just seemed cool. That's why anybody gets into music, because it speaks to them." And it continues to speak to him, so much so that he’s tabled Nickel & Rose just as the duo was establishing itself as a major folk festival draw t Read More

“I realized through this process that we’re capable of handling a lot m...ore pain than we think we can,” says Carl Anderson. “If that message can come through to even just one person who needs to hear it, then that’s what it’s all about.” While pain is an integral part of the Nashville-based songwriter’s brilliant new EP, ‘You Can Call Me Carl,’ the collection is, at its heart, a story of resilience and resolve, an exploration of the ways in which we survive and the selves that we grow into. Recorded with an all-star backing band that includes Charlie Hall (The War On Drugs), Phil Cook (Hiss Golden Messenger), Daniel Clarke (Ryan Adams), and Rick Holstrom (Mavis Staples), the EP is lush but understated, with rich, rootsy arrangements underpinning Anderson’s reedy voice as he grapples with the fallout from infidelity, heartbreak, and betrayal. Despite their serious emotional weight, the songs are ultimately exercises in optimism, little journeys to Hell and back that find their author emerging stronger and more self-reliant than ever before. “Sometimes when you’re in a difficult stretch like that, it can feel like you’re being tested,” Anderson explains. “Music was a way for me to Read More

“Any song that’s true is a good song in my mind,” says Kevin Patrick,... the lo-fi bedroom folk artist better known as Field Medic. “That’s why I never find it necessary to add too much stuff to my recordings. I’m just into songs themselves.” That principle is the guiding light behind Field Medic’s hypnotically beautiful and fearlessly honest new record, ‘fade into the dawn.’ Patrick’s first proper full-length release for Run For Cover and his first since making the leap to full-time musician, the collection features ten sparse, acoustic tracks that reckon with our perceptions of success and self as they face down the inevitable complications that arise from realizing any hard-won dream. Patrick has always written candidly about doubt and darkness and anxiety, but he digs deeper than ever before here, blending black humor and bold introspection as he weighs fantasy against reality and searches for meaning in the mundane. “I used to be a romantic / Now I'm a dude in a laminate,” he sings of life on perpetual tour, encapsulating at once both the tantalizing allure and endless tedium of the road. GIRL SKIN

Brooklyn, NY
When you record an album in your bedroom, the resulting music will inevitab...ly reflect the intimacy of that space. And so it is with the songs that make up the Brooklyn six-piece collective GIRL SKIN’s debut album, Shade is on the other side – 11 tracks of thoughtful folk-rock that is just as much a throwback as it is a forward-thinking body of work. Written and recorded by frontman Sid Simons – along with contributions from his band mates Wyatt Mones, Stanley Simons, Ruby Wang, Sophie Cozine and Noah Boling – the the songs are inspired by Simons’ unorthodox life journey which has taken him from Portland, Australia, New York and to Shanghai, as well as through a rambling, two-month road trip around North America instead of finishing high school. Combining fragile folk and delicate art-rock to create ethereal chamber-pop songs that fearlessly revel in Simons’ most private thoughts, the album, musically, exists somewhere between monumental British statements such as All Things Must Pass and The Man Who, where quiet and tender folk meets dramatic guitar-pop. "Shade" is an elegant mosaic of musical touchstones presented by a young and talented band who are openly coming into their own. Read More

It’s an instantly engaging chemistry the two share, a captivating musical bond that mirrors the comfort, closeness, and camaraderie of the album’s homespun roots. “This record is about as close to the sound of home as you can get,” says Blasucci. “We recorded it with a bunch of our friends in the house where we were living in a neighborhood that we loved. In 2019, Pat took the US by storm, with breakout performances at the 30A Festival, SXSW, Kerrville Folk Festival and the Americana Festival. “The raspy melodic soul of Byrne’s voice recalls the emotional spells the late Austin troubadour Jimmy LaFave used to cast, though Byrne’s songwriting bears a distinctive Irish stamp. He’s more contemporary than strict traditionalists, putting him more in the league of Glen Hansard or Luka Bloom…” Peter Blackstock, The Austin American Statesman “Pat Byrne lives in Austin and traffics in the kind of earnest roots rock championed by artists like Shakey Graves. His voice and songwriting chops show the reason he’s attracted a lot of attention. Look for a big second act from this artist.”— Tom Thornton, Riff Magazine A sophomore LP out in mid-2020, has an edgier feel underscoring both emotional depth and greater confidence, while blending new influences with his rich Irish heritage. Zach Winters

Tulsa, OK
Zach Winters is a naturalist—his work and life often woven together. Wint...ers’ songs resonate with the sacred and the commonplace—companionship, wrestling with the divine, passing seasons, and the pursuit of a tangible beauty. His music has more kinship to the poetry of Frost and Tagore than to his contemporaries. Over the years, Winters has honed his songwriting and DIY approach, garnering praise from voices like Paste Magazine and self-producing six full-length albums as well as a handful of EPs and other projects. Winters moved his family to southern Mexico for a year for his kids to learn Spanish and to finish his latest 13-track LP, Love is a Garden. The album features Winters most striking collection of songs to date, while staying true to his homemade yet luxuriant variety of indie-folk. It features everything from generous string arrangements to groovy bass lines to warm horn sections, and most notably, Winters’ yearning, gentle, and sometimes playful vocal layering. In the last few years, Winters has been on tour throughout the US, Canada, Mexico, Europe, Australia & New Zealand, exploring new ways to make meaningful connections and a sustainable life in music.
