Astrid Sonne

Copenhagen, DENMARK
Astrid Sonne is a Copenhagen-based composer and viola player. With a backgr...ound in classical music, she opens up an electronic space to channel different perceptions of sensory and emotional states of being through open, melodic compositions. Composing with an ambitious focus on transition and shifting forms, Astrid Sonne creates mindful mutations between repetition and renewal. Her music is an unfolding of the auditive elements, be it electronically produced sounds or organic material form voices or acoustic instruments. Key to Sonnes practice is an ability to weave emotional experiences into static, minimalistic soundscapes. Her work presents a broad variety of musical inspiration, from European choir tradition and simplicity to trance and cacophonous expressions, all translated into a new language that communicates high-intensity polyrhythms and careful ambience with equal kindness. Astrid Sonne released her debutalbum Human Lines in 2018 and the minialbum Cliodynamics in October 2019, both on Copenhagen based label Escho. They illustrate the curiosity of Astrid Sonne and bring forward the distinct acoustic/electronic dualism of her chrystal clear musical aesthetic. Read More

Being Dead

Austin, TX
Being Dead is made up of a couple o’ freaks in the heart of Texas. Multi-...instrumentalists Juli Keller and Cody Dosier started playing music together in 2016, but Being Dead didn’t take its true form until the following year, when they decided to stake out a 2-person operation. Keller and Dosier share instrument duties, swapping between vox, keys, guitar, and percussion, the end result a lo-fi creep-rock experimentation at the intersection of brash and melodic. Sharing a passion for blood and darkness explored through a playful sound, the duo offers a fresh look at hell. Read More

Fennesz

Vienna, AUSTRIA
Fennesz is an Austrian guitarist and composer living in Vienna. Using a fil...tered and treated electric guitar as the starting point for his lush soundscapes, Fennesz has created a personal and groundbreaking discourse throughout his career. Perhaps sculpting the last truly unique vision for the guitar, his luminant compositions are anything but sterile experiments. Fennesz’s world of sound unfolds and resembles sensitive, telescopic recordings of rainforest insect life or natural atmospheric occurrences, an inherent naturalism permeating each piece. In addition to his prolific output as a solo artist, and his ongoing investigation of the limits of noise, automatic composition, field music or contemporary classical, Fennesz is also a frequent collaborator with other luminaries of the scene. Girlpool

The music Avery Tucker and Harmony Tividad release as Girlpool occupies a t...ransient space. Their constant evolution makes it perfectly impossible to articulate exactly where their project falls within the contemporary musical canon; this is one of the many reasons Girlpool’s music is so captivating. 2019's What Chaos Is Imaginary was a collection of songs unlike any Girlpool songs you’d ever heard, exactly what 2017's Powerplant was to 2015's Before The World Was Big. For the first time, it is clear who wrote what song. 2020 will see drum machines and synthesizers and beautiful/new harmonies and huge guitars and at east one orchestral breakdown by a string octet. Lisel

Los Angeles, CA
Lisel is the sweeping, ethereal avant-pop project of singer, producer, and ...experimental artist Eliza Bagg. Called “otherworldly, warped” (Stereogum) and “billowing, crystalline” (Gorilla vs. Bear), Lisel’s debut album was released in 2019 on Luminelle Records. The music takes you on a vivid and lush journey that blends nostalgic synthesizers, digital sequences, and glitchy beats with cinematic strings and Renaissance-inspired vocals, creating a sound that “revels in small electro-pop ecstasies that burrow inward” (NPR). Bagg has received particular recognition for her use of extended vocal techniques and unique vocal sound, with Pitchfork referencing her “god-tier control” and comparing her to "a lovelorn alien reaching out from the farthest reaches of the galaxy.” Bagg has collaborated across genres with prominent experimental artists — Meredith Monk’s opera Atlas, vocal quartets with Julianna Barwick, touring with Roomful of Teeth, a minimalist horror opera. She has sung with New York Philharmonic and the Los Angeles Philharmonic, worked closely with musicians like John Zorn, Caroline Shaw, and Ben Frost, and performed at venues from The Kitchen to Lincoln Center. Parlor Walls

Brooklyn, NY
Parlor Walls' music swims between chaos and restraint, straddling the line ...of post-rock and avant-garde and something else entirely. Alyse Lamb's guitar churns a thick anthem as she belts and commands the stage at full throttle (think Wire's playful ache coupled with Siouxsie Sioux's understated angst). Drums and synth propel, both delivered in tandem by Christopher Mulligan. One limb cranks industrial riffs while the other catapults dancing beats. Together the duo deliver a heavy dose of colorful, rhythmic urgency intended to push, pull, shake and ignite. The two musicians formed Parlor Walls in Brooklyn, NY, in 2014. With backgrounds in visual art and dance, Lamb and Mulligan set out to create a world visceral and cinematic. The duo released two EPs on the independent label Famous Swords before signing with Northern Spy in 2016. Parlor Walls released the critically acclaimed debut LP Opposites in 2017, described by Pitchfork as "lending new definition to the term heavy... with an urgency both convincing and sophisticated." The ep EXO followed in 2018, heralded as “beautiful and threatening". Parlor Walls are set to release their second LP, Heavy Tongue, in Feb 2020. Read More

Purple Pilgrims

Coromandel, NEW ZEALAND
Purple Pilgrims is the experimental dream pop project of Clementine and Val...entine Nixon, a pair of sisters who explore the concepts of synthesized nature and ancient futurism in their music. The Nixons combine their crystalline vocals—which evoke the ethereal beauty and wisdom of legends like Joni Mitchell and Judy Collins—with gleaming synths and hazy guitars that sound both futuristic and eternal. On their earliest releases, Purple Pilgrims cloaked their songs in layers of lo-fi distortion. Gradually, they stripped the noise away on 2017's Eternal Delight (Not Not Fun) and 2019's Perfumed Earth (Flying Nun), both of which allowed their distinctive mix of folk inspirations and synthetic sounds to become as transporting as possible. Sophie Hutchings

Sydney, AUSTRALIA
Australian pianist/composer Sophie Hutchings performs elegant post-classica...l music which flits from soothing, idyllic, and melancholy to urgent and tempestuous. Likened to artists such as Nils Frahm, Max Richter, and Dustin O'Halloran, her music focuses on delicate piano melodies, sometimes incorporating strings, woodwind, percussion, and ethereal vocals. Her recordings range from more fully arranged albums like 2012's Night Sky to sparse, dreamy efforts such as 2017's Byways. Sophie’s compositions sway from the disarmingly spare and elegant to the romantic and epic, with a fragility that manages to be both calm and exquisite but always pushing forward. Nominated for the Australian Music Prize and listed in the top five live instrumentalists of the year for the National Live Music Awards, Sophie Hutchings’ music has been described as ‘stirring, vigorous,[and] grandly melodic,’(MOJO Magazine) her rippling piano has an ‘intimate, contemplative quality,’(The Guardian).
