Altamesa

Austin, TX
Altamesa is a Cosmic Americana and Rock & Roll band from Austin, Texas that... mixes the production values of Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers and Big Star with the songwriting sensibilities of Neil Young and Bruce Springsteen. Founded as a solo project in 2015 by singer, guitarist, and songwriter Evan Charles, the band has solidified its lineup to include the Happen-Ins frontman, guitarist, and songwriter Sean Faires. After receiving 4 stars in the Austin Chronicle for the debut solo record The Long Ride Home in 2016, the band's subsequent 2019 release Idol Frontier netted a second consecutive 4 star review in which Chronicle writer Doug Freeman deemed the record "a revelation fulfilled." In an accompanying feature piece, Chronicle writer Kevin Curtin called the record a "sophomore stunner" and enlisted prospective listeners to "imagine Bruce Springsteen's desolate cult classic Nebraska sung by a godforsaken Tom Petty with Keith Richards on guitar." With two albums, two appearances at Willie Nelson's Luck Reunion, and a fistful of journalistic superlatives under its belt, the band will release a 7" vinyl and music video of their new single "Interstate" in April of 2020. Angela Perley

Columbus, OH
"Angela Perley has been gigging nonstop with her band The Howlin' Moons sin...ce they released their debut album in 2014, laying down an interesting mix of folk, Americana, and ’60s-tinged psychedelic rock that floats seamlessly between Bob Dylan and Procol Harum, sometimes within the same song."— No Depression All of this has led up to Perley’s forthcoming LP, '4:30' (released Aug. 2, 2019), her first solo effort which she co-produced with longtime guitarist and collaborator, Chris Connor. Her third full-length record illustrates the songwriter’s knack for deft storytelling, warm vocal layers and disarming melodies that beget personal growth and mobility, surging from raw and far-sighted pathos. Billboard says, "The set’s 12 songs run the gamut from psychedelic garage rock to melodic pop and heartfelt country and Americana" and Perley's character-driven love songs on '4:30' are surreal in their ability to master genre-fluidity, with forthright storytelling, wry lyricism and a host of dreamy instrumentation. Perley has opened for Willie Nelson, Lucinda Williams, Tyler Childers, O.A.R and Blues Traveller and continues her musical journey one record and show at a time. Read More

The Band of Heathens

Austin, TX
Sometimes it’s the “happy accidents,” rather than elaborately laid pl...ans, that lead to something lasting, and that’s precisely the case with award-winning Austin rock and roll stalwarts, The Band of Heathens. “It’s really funny how the loose, tequila-fueled weekly side-project that started almost 14 years ago has evolved into what the band is today,” singer and songwriter Gordy Quist says with a laugh as he recalls the band’s road to success. But planned or not, the band has enjoyed sustained success for more than a decade, racking up 10 albums and more than twelve hundred performances in thirteen countries. Quist and Ed Jurdi, the band’s other principal singer and songwriter, are the only founding members still in the group that first came together in 2005. The core lineup of Jurdi and Quist on guitars and lead vocals, were joined by Trevor Nealon on keys in 2009 and Richard Millsap on drums in 2012. Bassist Jesse Wilson came on board in 2017. Caleb Elliott

Florence, AL
We’ve all heard the story of the preacher’s musical son before: the Ste...tson Stratoliner-wearing, bearded dreamer who up and moved to Nashville with nothing more than a Martin and a prayer. Caleb Elliott isn’t that. His story is something wilder. It comes from some place deeper. It’s a story the lanky, long-haired Louisianan has begun to tell on his debut album Forever to Fade. The swamp-art-rock record bridges the distance between the classically-trained sideman he was to the songwriting frontman he’s become; the 480 miles between his musical origins in Natchitoches and Lafayette to his new home in The Shoals of Alabama; and the shift between a gothic upbringing inside a cult-style religion to finding mental and artistic liberation. While riding in the backseats of tour vans with Nicole Atkins, Dylan LeBlanc, and Travis Meadows, Caleb never stopped writing his own material. Along with producer Ben Tanner (Single Lock Records co-founder and keyboardist for Alabama Shakes), Caleb layers soulful string scores over that booming, dirty-sweet groove that gave name to the Muscle Shoals Sound and John Cale-inspired arrangements. Forever to Fade shows he’s ready to take the wheel. Read More

Chris Canterbury

Nashville, TN
Born and raised in the piney woods outside of Haynesville, Louisiana, Chris... Canterbury comes from the grimy remnants of a small oil patch town, a way of life that is slowly fading but still lingers in the songs he sings. Born to a working-class blue-collar family, Chris struggled to find the middle ground between his grandfather’s Southern Baptist sermons and the honky-tonk mystics that he discovered on old vinyl records in high school. Armed with an old thrift-shop guitar, Chris began playing and writing stories about life from a unique but oddly familiar point-of-view. Songs about liquor stores, truck stops, low-rent motels, and the grifters and transients that frequent them. It doesn’t matter if it’s a pool hall or a theater, a festival or a front porch, Chris’s live sound is the whiskey-laden prospectus that anyone with a struggle can relate to. Read More

The Deer

Do No Harm finds Austin five-piece The Deer stepping confidently into their... role as a rock band. A folk group that honed their craft on the festival circuit while releasing three albums on their own, collecting fans the old-fashioned way, they partnered with Austin indie label Keeled Scales last fall to release their new album. The album’s title Do No Harm is a phrase from the Hippocratic Oath. It’s also a line in the song “Stark Raven” that calls birds from all directions to come together and agree on how to allow a state of peace for all. Many of the songs on the album focus on peace and communication. “Move To Girls” is about telling someone how you need to be loved, “Swoon” is a conversation between the peacemakers on all sides to dispel injustice, “Everything was Beautiful and Nothing Hurt” reels the listener through the human zoo in Vonnegut’s anti-war novel Slaughterhouse-Five, and “Walking In Space” from the 1960s rock opera Hair shouts its protest vehemently: “Our eyes are open wide.” The Deer toured the West Coast last fall and is planning a Midwest/East Coast tour for this spring. They're already at work on the follow-up to Do No Harm. Read More

"The humanity on "Dreamin’" is so pure that it’s virtually superhuman" ...- Pitchfork Onstage, bassist Jon Samuels is the only Friendship member who stands up. He is usually swaying back and forth as the songs bear down, pulling together and apart. Friendship’s new record, Dreamin’ (out now on Orindal Records) is an exorable wave of motion, endlessly rocking between intimacy and loneliness. The songs of Dreamin’ are immediate yet gentle. They explore human signs and meaning and are as equally driven by moments of love and connection as they are by our total unknowing, even to those closest to us. In Not an Exit, the driver-narrator asks their passenger: “Can you see those cloudy symbols? / One for fine, two for miserable / three might stand for not insurmountable.” The language is unclear. The message is variable. The characters of Dreamin’ reflect our abiding search for love and understanding. Read More

Gritty soul and blues singer, Gina Sicilia, always stays one step ahead in ...her songwriting and music. The Newtown, Pennsylvania-native, who now calls Nashville home, has never been one to sit still musically. On her new album, Love Me Madly, Sicilia slides fervently and warmly into a wide range of soul music, from pop-inflected, hooky tunes, to horn-drenched heart-stoppers. Produced by Cody Dickinson of the North Mississippi Allstars, with Luther Dickinson performing guitar on tracks including “Misery With You”, Gina Sicilia’s ninth studio album showcases her ability to get inside a song and inhabit it, so that the lyrics and music flow effortlessly from her body, heart, and soul. “Gina is an incredible singer and a phenomenal songwriter. It’s very simple, she is a force of nature.” —Cody Dickinson (North Mississippi Allstars) Love Me Madly arrives hard on the heels of 2018’s Heard the Lie, which debuted on the Billboard blues charts at #10. That album showcased Sicilia’s canny songwriting and her ability to find the grooves in all styles of roots music; it featured gospel-inflected tunes, good old school R&B, and steel guitar-drenched Americana. Harvest Thieves dig deep within their own personal stories and offer up eni...gmatic songs of candidness and well-worn intensity. In lieu of visceral play-by-plays and detail-oriented specifics, they gather vulnerable messages and wrap them warmly in coded and beautifully shielded lyrics, focusing more on emotions than senses. Harvest Thieves' songs gather the most vulnerable details of their crossroads and recounts their experiences in a manner that provides an openness and honesty that most artists never approach. Making an indelible mark on their hometown, Austin American-Statesman proclaimed, “Alternative-Country has largely blended into the broader Americana landscape in recent years, but here’s a band that harkens back to the dead-center focus of the genre.” Ranging from lyrically bitter and laced with tongue-in-cheek middle fingers to Blue Rodeo-rooted, harmonically-blended vocals, Harvest Thieves flawlessly weave through their emotions with a raw and vulnerable tone that can only be possessed by surviving the heartaches and shortcomings of life’s pitfalls. When Jason James walks onstage, he declares his love of classic country bef...ore he even sings a note. His choice of attire — embroidered suits or pearl-snap shirts and sharply creased slacks — offers a visual tribute to his musical heroes the traditions they established. But it’s not his looks or style that provide the most convincing evidence of his kinship with other giants of the genre. It’s his sound: the pure, honest voice of a singer who rediscovered his soul when he reawakened his early love of well-crooned waltzes and hook-filled honky-tonkers. On Seems Like Tears Ago, via his own Melodyville Records (Smith Music), James follows his self-titled 2015 debut with 10 original odes that recall the work of his influences without resorting to mimicry. The Kernal, a Southern gentleman with an old soul who is tied deeply to the... legacy and showmanship of the wandering musician and the historic Grand Ole Opry. Along with his band, the New Strangers, the Kernal tours the country with his home-grown brand of Southern mystique. LIGHT COUNTRY introduces us to a funny, whip-smart songwriter and musical stylist on these original tracks. The album opens with the sweeping gospel number, “Where We’re Standing,” which builds to a swirling electric guitar outro. He describes “Knock Kneed Ballerina” as a “shoulder-dance country song and a sort of personal, band- mission statement;” it’s also a knowing nod to the classic sound of ‘70s Nashville Countrypolitan hits and a poignant ode to musical also-rans everywhere. “At the Old Taco Bell” was inspired by a photo of a boarded up, derelict Taco Bell. “It’s about me moving into an abandoned, and therefore affordable, Taco Bell at some point in the future,” he deadpans. Elsewhere he tackles modern domesticity (the Harry Nilsson-esque “Cold Shoulder”), and ends on an apology of sorts for his choice of lifestyle, “I earned my degree but I would rather rake some leaves … Barely eatin’ and meetin’ my ren Read More

Widely known for possessing one of Norway’s greatest country voices as th...e lead singer of Lucky Lips, Malin Pettersen’s career has been a whirlwind since the release of her debut solo album, References Pt.1 in the spring of 2018. Critically lauded in Norway and recent winner of a Spellemann award (Norwegian Grammy), as well as nominated for an Ameripolitan award, the record launched Pettersen’s immensely promising solo career with widespread touring as a result. Profoundly inspired by a trip to Nashville, which included a slot at The Station Inn with Lucky Lips for Americanafest, Pettersen returned to Norway with several songs ready to record. Wanting to do something wholly different from the band sound of her debut, she recorded a mini album all-alone in the studio. Alonesome (Album released 2019) showcases Pettersen’s compelling – and at the same time fragile – voice and unique musicianship. Thin Lear

Queens, NY
Queens-based songwriter Thin Lear (Matt Longo) has always been drawn to the... stories of forgotten eccentrics, but rarely haunted by their subjects. And yet, upon the reading of 1920’s occultist Netta Fornario, and her misunderstood demise on a tiny island off of Scotland, he unearthed the inspiration for a surreal and ethereal collection of songs, Wooden Cave. Pulling influence from the insular world of Astral Weeks, the melodic adventurousness of Harry Nilsson, and the eclecticism of Shuggie Otis, Thin Lear creates songs existing on a sonic and lyrical island of their own. The result is eleven tracks sprawling from ornate, warm ballads, to psychedelically-tinged folk, to propulsive grooves, brimming with melody and heart. Wooden Cave, written for outsiders like Netta, radiates with a sonic glow that harkens back to 70’s-era studio obsessives, familiar and surprising in equal measure, like a face from a dream. Ward Hayden & The Outliers (formerly Girls Guns & Glory) formed as a way to... break from the music so commonly found on popular radio airwaves. Hayden’s foray into country music and early rock ‘n’ roll began with a fateful borrowing of a few of his mother’s cassettes. When asked, Hayden remarks, “I was doing these long drives and there was nothing appealing to me on the radio. I was twenty years old at the time and had been through my first experiences with heartbreak and loss. When I put some of these cassettes on the player in my Oldsmobile Delta Eighty-Eight, all I could think was, “this is everything I’ve been searching for.” The band has cut it’s teeth the old fashioned way: on the road and on the stage.
