BLK JKS

Johannesburg, SOUTH AFRICA
BLK JKS are Fader Magazine cover stars (2008) and one of Dave Grohls faves,... still regarded by many in the know as one of the most underrated and best live rock bands in the world. Once dubbed “Africa’s Best New Band” by Rolling Stone Magazine International, drummer Tshepang Ramoba was also named best musician at SXSW (2009) by Billboard Magazine. BLK JKS are riffing against a digital age where the value of music is often judged more by the monetization of social media 'likes' than by the cultural content it communicates. It's this commitment to cultural activism that fuels the band's return with a brightly burning album “Abantu: Before Humans” and single "Harare" 10 years on from their critically acclaimed debut “After robots”. “Harare” featuring vocalist Morena Leraba from Lesotho, is a song manifesting the BLK JKS's continued mission to map uncharted spaces in the music of the Diaspora - which they have pursued by working with everyone from Alicia Keys to Vieux Farka Touré "It's always been about reaching deeper into the roots, as we feel nothing has a more significant impact on our collective presents and futures" they say ... about their signature shapeshifting sonic fiction. Neuza

Fogo, CABO VERDE
Neuza's own story could be one of the emotional tales that she tells in her... lyrics. Her mother was a local singer in Cabo Verde who passed away from cancer when Neuza was just a little girl. For years Neuza found music too painful a reminder so she put it to the side and focused on her education, work and family. One day, her coworkers in a restaurant heard her singing while she set the tables and insisted that she share her voice with the customers. Soon she was heard by José da Silva, the producer of the late Cesaria Evora, Cabo Verde's most famous musical export. He signed her and released her 2014 debut, "Flor di Bila," which reached an international audience. The rhythms and songs that Neuza grew up with have a long and complicated history. The Cabo Verde Islands, off the coast of Senegal in West Africa, were uninhabited until 1462, when the Portuguese created a colony there. Enslaved Africans soon became a major segment of the population, and the mix of Portuguese and African cultures led to the development of a unique language, Krioulo (Creole), and a number of beautiful musical styles. Evora was most famous for her haunting mornas. Neuza sings those as well, but she's espec Read More
